Oxytocin Breathing Technique for BIZ Owners
As business owners, we all know about stress! Whether it is around deadlines, money issues, needing more clients, working with difficult clients…the list goes on and on.
Many experts report that stopping to take a breath will help diminish the effects of stress. Yes, just stopping and taking a deep breath does help.
And, I want to introduce you to a specific breathing technique that I believe, trumps all others. It is called The Oxytocin Breath, or Oxy Breath for short (directions below).
As a business owner, I often used adrenaline to push myself to keep going. I needed to do this and this and this, so I pushed and pushed and pushed. As a result, I experienced adrenal fatigue, known also as BURN OUT!
It took me many months working with my healthcare professional to begin healing those poor adrenals and I knew I had to begin working differently to not compromise my health. Thankfully, I learned to practice the Oxy Breath. I find that I am managing stress better and doing less pushing and more allowing in my work.
I learned the Oxytocin Breath from Ellie Drake through BraveHeart Women. It is a way to stimulate the Vegas nerve and create more oxytocin in our bodies. And that is a good thing!
Oxytocin is a hormone that we produce during orgasm, nursing babies, hugging, laughing, cuddling, etc. It is the feel-good, pleasure hormone and it:
- Creates ease
- Brings a sense of calmness
- Lowers cortisol and stress levels
- Increases sense of well being and empowerment
When you practice the Oxy Breath, you create more oxytocin in your bodies and can much more easily handle the daily stress and whatever curveballs are thrown your way.
As business owners, we combat stressors every day. When these stressors act upon our body, cortisol is produced and we experience nasty stress responses such as rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, shallow breathing. We produce adrenaline as we experience fight, flight, or freeze!
The opposite of adrenaline, oxytocin has been referred to as the superhero of hormones. It allows us to feel relaxed and refreshed, decreases the levels of pain, helps combat infections and viruses, and helps to lower cortisol.
It’s time for you to experience the Oxytocin Breathing for yourself!
- Sit or stand in a comfortable position.
- Allow your hands to gently rest on your belly.
- Breathe in through your nose and allow your belly to expand like a balloon. (Sometimes it takes a little practice to get the hang of this.)
- Exhale with the sound hahhhhh AND smile! That’s right. Inhale and inflate your belly. Exhale with pleasure, the “hahhh” sound, with a smile on your face.
- Allow 3 of these breaths.
When to do the Oxy Breathing
You can do the oxytocin breath whenever you want! Since stress often comes on suddenly, it is very helpful to have a storehouse of oxytocin on hand to deal with those stressful situations. Therefore, the best advice is to make Oxy Breathing a habit. Some folks do it every morning when then get up and every night upon retiring. I like to do it in my car – at every red light!
In addition, when you are feeling stressed. Stop. Do an Oxy Breath … or two or three.
After a short while, you will notice that you are handling the everyday stresses differently, with more resilience and more ease.
