Secret to Sowing and Reaping
In the 1960’s, Pete Seager from the group The Byrds wrote the music for the song “Turn – Turn – Turn,” taking it straight to the roof of the music charts. The wisdom in the lyrics were taken directly from the Bible – chapter 3 in the book of Ecclesiastes. It made a huge impact on all of it’s listeners due to how strongly the words rang true as they still do today. Stop for a moment: there IS a specified time for every purpose under heaven. Each season gives us order in the big scheme of things; so no chaos.
Let me share one perspective where this principle applies…
Secret to Sowing and Reaping – what a great biblical teaching. Each season is very important and not independent of the other. Together they form a strong cycle of growth that determines how strong the roots will go and how bountiful the harvest will be.
First, we must begin with the plowing season. We need to break through the earth, turn it over, prepare & give it what it needs to produce the crop we’re investing our time and money in. As much as we’d love to go straight to the reaping season without first doing this important step, this is crucial so we don’t find ourselves laboring in vain.
Then, we need to purchase & prepare our seeds. Some seeds need to be prepared in advance while others may be sown just as they are. Sowing them in the ground, we make sure they are covered with a fine layer of dirt. The waiting period now begins to take us to the next stage, which is sprouting. In the next several days, the seed will die to themselves, thus getting a new birth. We may not see anything going on but we can trust that the seeds are being worked on by the rain & sun descending upon them every day. There is not much more we can do but wait.
Finally, the reaping season is here; strong solid roots have grown. The seeds have sprouted, and they have produced an abundant harvest. The fruit of our labor is happily here and we are so excited to see the results. Oh!
How we’d love every season to be a time of harvest and good breaks! But without all 4 seasons we would be ill prepared and our fruit would not be of quality.
I compare this process to life. We give birth to an idea, a project or a new venture. To get started on it’s rightful path, so we feed ourselves some information, we have to study this volatile new subject and we then set it to motion. We get prepared. We plant the seeds.
Now, maybe we don’t see the result as fast as we’d like to but we must remember that all is not visible with the human eye. Progress comes, but we often only see it in hindsight. Then, just as we ALMOST get discouraged, here comes a sprout.
Oh! That beautiful sprout. We must keep feeding it, watering it and taking care of it so that it can become strong & fruitful. We keep at it with vigilance. And before we know it, we have strong and solid sprouts all over the field… and we are reaping the fruit of our long hard earned labor.
If you’re not making as much progress as you’d like to see, the key is to persevere. DON’T EVER QUIT. Start using the principle of sowing and reaping. Hold your position and your passion. Keep a good attitude and do the right thing even when it’s hard. When you do that, you’re passing the test. Stand firm; God promises that your season of harvest is on it’s way. Be encouraged – He is preparing you for blessing.
Remember that you have the Secret to Sowing and Reaping inside of you. He has placed within you everything you need to be successful; you just have to step out and walk confidently. Boldly declare the faith you have in your endeavor then put some action behind it. Keep an attitude of expectancy – go out believing that great things are coming your way
You will ALWAYS harvest what you have been sowing. (Galatians 6:7) Have you ever looked at a large old tree and wondered how long it has been there? It’s amazing to think that at one point that gigantic tree was merely a tiny seed. In the same way, our words and actions are seeds. Think about the types of seeds you have been sowing.
Are you sowing encouragement? Hope? Blessings? Then that’s what you’ll reap in the future. But if you’ve been sowing criticism, judgment, discouragement and defeat you’re probably already reaping a bad harvest. It’s time to start changing your seeds.
Today I encourage you to uproot any negative seeds you may have planted and begin sowing good seeds for your future. That, my friend… is the secret.
